Our story

Clevedon Baptist Church was formed in May 1922. People became ‘members’ and met on the present site, in a hall which was built in 1905 and used for a men’s Bible class.  Over the years the building saw many changes to make room for the growing numbers.  In 2005 a brave decision was made by today’s members to redevelop the whole site.  The present building facing onto Queen’s Square was opened on
5 November 2006.

This photo taken about 1938 shows the Manning Wardle 0-6-0 No.5 of the Weston, Clevedon & Portishead Light Railway crossing The Triangle. The line was only a few feet away from the school room. You can imagine the noise as the train went slowly by letting off steam, often braking to a halt. The railway closed in May 1940. £2 a year was paid to the railway company as ground rent for a piece of land.

After the church was renovated and the organ rebuilt, CBC was reopened on Easter Sunday 1936.

The Church Lecture Hall was opened in July 1937.

While the church was being rebuilt, we met in the Curzon Cinema Sunday mornings and St Peter's church in the evenings. On 5 November 2006 (a day to remember) we paraded from the Curzon to the new church building, now fronting Queen's Square, carrying balloons in festive mood.
